How To Install Webmin in Ubuntu ?

To run webmin you need some perl libraries.

Use the below code to install those libraries:

sudo apt-get install perl libnet-ssleay-perl openssl libauthen-pam-perl libpam-runtime libio-pty-perl libmd5-perl

Now download the webmin Debian package:

wget http://www.webmin.com/download/deb/webmin-current.deb

Install it using the command:
sudo dpkg -i webmin_1.490_all.deb

And Open you web browser and enter:

https://your-server-ip:10000/

Install “Ubuntu Tweak” and make UBUNTU more easy

Ubuntu Tweak is a small app for ubuntu which helps you to configure some hidden ubuntu settings in few clicks. Also it helps newbies to add/remove applications easily.

Few days back Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.7.2 has been released. According to the author it has lots of improvements when compared to the last release. Some of the major improvements are.

Fully support Linux Mint 7 (it is an ubuntu based OS)
New option to fix root theme
Ability to update PPA sources from old style to new style
Some new PPA sources: Pidgin, Moovida
Loads of bugs fixed

You can download the debian package here.

After downloading double click the .deb file to get installed.

Then you can open Ubuntu Tweak at application > system tools >ubuntu tweak

Delete unnecessary files in UBUNTU using BleachBit

BleachBit is a small application it will help you to delete the unnecessary in your disk. It is available for both linux and windows.

Follow the step by step instruction to install and run Bleach Bit in UBUNTU.

1) First you need to download the Bleach Bit. Click here to reach the download page. Then choose the file as per your OS.

2)After downloading .deb file place it on your desktop and double click it. Now the package installer window will open.

Click the Install Package button.

3)After that select Applications > System Tools > BleachBit As Administrator (if “System Tools” was not there then read this post to activate it)
4)Now BeachBit application will open. And number applications will be listed in the right column. From that select the applications as per your need.

5)Select Preview option at the top so that you can view number of unwanted files in your system. (optional)

6)After that select Delete option. Delete Confirmation windows will ask you to confirm your action. Click Delete to proceed.

7)Thats it all the unnecessary files will be start getting deleted.

Different ways to see hidden folders in UBUNTU

In Ubuntu by default file browser will be hide folders from user if its name starts with ‘.‘ (dot). In this post I will list the different ways to see the hidden folders in Ubuntu.

1)Command line fans can use ‘ls -al‘ command to see the hidden folders.

GUI Fans can follow any one of these listed below:

2) Select Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor

If System Tools doesn’t exists in Applications menu activate it as follows.

Do a right click at the left end of your gnome panel and select “Edit Menus” option. A window will appear in that check “System Tools option”. (See the image for reference).

Now select Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor.

In the Configuration Editor window select desktop > gnome > file_views from the left column .

After that check show_hidden_files option. (See the image for reference).

3) Next is by navigating into the folder in which hidden folders exists and select View > show hidden files from the file browser menu.

4)But an easy shortcut exists for this. Navigate into the folder in which hidden folders were present and press ‘ctrl+h‘ and thats it, now file browser displays all folders starts with .(dot). Press ‘ctrl+h‘ again to hide the folders.

Take Screen Shots using GIMP

GIMP is a free and open source graphics editor. A perfect open source alternative for Photoshop. UBUNTU ships GIMP as their default photo editing software. GIMP is available for windows users too. Check it out here

Today’s post will guide you to use GIMP to take screen shots.

1. Open GIMP Applications > Graphics > GIMP Image Editor.

2. Navigate to File > Acquire. Then select the “Screenshot..” option.

3. Next the following window will appear with few option. Select according to your need and click “Snap” button.

4. Now your cursor will be changed into cross, after that just do a click or select the area you need in your screen shot. Your snap shot is ready.

5. Edit and save in the file format as per your need.

Using Magic SysRq key in linux

Magic “SysRq” key, Have you used this key before?. Today i will give you a small tip based on this “SysRq” key.

In short Magic SysRq is a key combination in Linux which allows user to give some low level commands regardless of system’s state. You can read more about Magic SysRq key here.

Certainly when your system freezes you cannot do anything right?
Here is the procedure to use the SysRq key to reboot your linux distro (myself tested in UBUNTU) without any lose of data.

After your system got hanged. Press Alt+SysRq in your keyboard then by holding the those keys press the following keys one by one R S E I U B

For Example:
Press Alt+SysRq then press R for 2-3 seconds then release R (remember you should release only R not Alt+SysRq) and now move to S and press it for 2-3 seconds and release S then move to E and so on…
Please remember you should not release Alt+SysRq throughout the sequence (i.e until you finish releasing ‘B’)

Try to remember the key sequence using the sentence “Reboot Even If System Utterly Broken” .

The key sequence to shutdown the system is Alt+SysRq+R+S+E+I+U+O . Follow the same procedure as above.

Connecting Net using BSNL USB modem

Hi friends here is my another ubuntu how to.

I did this today morning for my friend who purchased a new BSNL USB modem (model: Huawei EC325). He asked me configure his ubuntu 8.04 for connecting net through the BSNL USB modem.

After a little bit of googling I came to know about the procedures.

Please continue reading to know the step by step procedures.

1. Go to terminal (application > accessories > terminal )

2.Then type the following line in terminal.

sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf

It will ask the login password give it (remember it won’t appear still you can enter the password). Then hit enter

3. Now a text editor will open the wvdial.conf file then add the following content in that file

[Modem0]
Modem=/dev/ttyUSB0
Baud=115200
SetVolume=0
Dial Command = ATDT
init1=ATZ
init2=AT+CRM=1
FlowControl= Hardware (CRTSCTS)
[Dialer BSNL]
Username=
Password=
Phone=#777
Stupid Mode= 1
Inherits = Modem0

After adding the above content.

4.Change the line Modem=/dev/ttyUSB0 to what ever your device name is, you can see the device name using following command and search in the result which appears after entering it.

dmesg

Almost all the will have name “ttyUSB0″ as device name better confirm it by giving the “dmesg” command

5.Then Enter your Username and Password which is given to you while you are purchasing the USB modem.

See the example

Username=abttech
Password=123456

After adding that username and password to that content save your file.

6.Now come back to terninal then type the below command

sudo wvdial BSNL

Hit enter. After that connection will be established. Please remember don’t close the terminal window. If you close it you will lose the connection.

7.Now open the firefox and disable the work offline option (file > work offilne)

Ya you are done enjoy using internet in Ubuntu.

How to Use Chrome in Ubuntu

As you all know still Linux version of Chrome is not yet released. So it is not possible to install the chrome directly in Ubuntu.
But still you can use it in your Linux box.
Ya Codeweavers have created a Linux port called CrossOver Chromium that can be installed Ubuntu.

It is not a geeky thing its very simple and easy follow this.

Click here and Select the Chromium package for Ubuntu and Debian. (Use Firefox)

In the Firefox download dialogue, select Open with GDebi Package Installer (default)

After the Package Installer has started, click on the Install Package button

Type in your password

CrossOver Chromium is now being installed

Afterwards, click on Close and leave the Package Installer

You can now start Chromium by going to Applications > Crossover Chromium > Chromium

Ubuntu tips: Installing .bin extension file

Today’s Ubuntu (Linux) tip is “how to install .bin extension file in Ubuntu?”.

When you are trying to install some .bin extension file for your Ubuntu OS for example RealPlayer11GOLD.bin you can’t install it directly as you are doing it in windows. To install such .bin extension file you need to know some simple terminal commands, which will change the .bin file so that Ubuntu can executes it.

After downloading the .bin file move it to desktop or other folder in your Home directory.

Then open the terminal (applications > accessories > terminal)

Type the following command if have you stored the file in desktop. (Remember type all the mentioned commands in this post without quotes.)

“cd desktop”

or replace the word “desktop” in the above command with the folder name where you stored your .bin file.

Then hit enter

Type “ls” and hit enter to verify your file is present in that folder.

Next type the following important command.

“sudo chmod +x filename.bin”

In the above command change the word “filename” with name of the file which you are installing.

For example if you are installing RealPlayer11GOLD type the following command

sudo chmod +x RealPlayer11GOLD.bin”

Hit enter.

Then it will ask for password. Give your login password. It will not appear in screen when you type, so don’t get confused. Type it without any mistake.

Now the you have changed the bin file into application that can be executed by ubuntu

To execute it type the following command

“./filename.bin”

Replace the word “filename” with name of the file which you are installing.

For example:

“./RealPlayer11GOLD.bin’

Hit enter. Then it will start the installation. It will alert you when installation is over.
